This page explains how you can contact us if you have any questions about British citizenship and right of abode.

If you are currently in England, Northern Ireland, Scotland or Wales

For British Citizenship and right of abode telephone enquiries please contact the nationality customer contact centre on 0845 010 5200. Our opening hours are 0900 - 2100 Monday to Friday excluding bank holidays.

Monday is a particularly busy period and we would advise customers wishing to contact us on a Monday to do so after 1800.

Customers dialing this number will have the option to speak to an advisor:

  • about general enquiries regarding British Citizenship and right of abode; or to
  • request application forms.

If you require an application form or guidance notes you will need to select option 1. Agents on this line distribute forms and guidance notes and will not be able to answer any enquiries.

Email enquiries

You can email us at nationalityenquiries@ukba.gsi.gov.uk. It may take up 10 days to reply to your email.

  • If you wish to know whether you qualify for exemption from the knowledge of language and Life in the UK requirement you should refer to page 7 of the guide AN.
  • We will not be able to tell you whether you qualify for an exemption before you submit an application.
  • If you do not meet a requirement for naturalisation, but feel discretion should be exercised in your favour, you should explain this at page 14 of the application form. We will not be able to tell you prior to submitting an application whether it will be successful or not.
  • If your enquiry relates to an immigration matter, for example enquiries about visas or leave to remain in the United Kingdom, you should contact the immigration enquiry bureau. If your enquiry relates to working in the United Kingdom you should contact the work permits customer contact centre.

If you are overseas

If you are in the Channel Islands or Isle of Man you should contact the Lieutenant Governor's office.

If you are in a British overseas territory, contact the governor's office.

If you are elsewhere overseas, contact the nearest British diplomatic post.
