Home Office travel documents

This section explains what Home Office travel documents you may be able to obtain if you need to travel outside the United Kingdom but are unable to use a passport issued by your own country.

You can apply to us for a travel document in certain special circumstances. We issue different types of travel document depending on those circumstances and also on your status in the United Kingdom.

The four types of travel document are:

  • convention travel document (for refugees);
  • stateless persons' document;
  • one-way document (known as an IS137); and
  • certificate of travel.

From 17 March 2008 we will be issuing biometric travel documents. All existing travel documents can continue to be used until they expire. More information can be found on the applying page.

You can contact us for more information about making an application for a travel document.
